We are so excited to bring Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to Highland, Illinois!

Opened on June 1st, 2019, Fathom Brazilian Jiu Jitsu offers classes for

KIDS (6-12) and ADULTS (13 & up).

Conveniently located 1 block south of the Highland square!


Why Fathom?

The word "Fathom" has 2 meanings:

1. to understand or comprehend

At Fathom BJJ, we don't want to just teach you techniques to memorize, we want you to truly learn and understand the philosophy and art that is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a deeply personal martial art with unprecedented room for adaptation, creativity, and individual style. In order to develop your own BJJ "fingerprint", you need to understand the underlying principles that guide and structure the system.

2. A method of measuring the depth of water

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has had ties to water since it's inception. As it's name suggests, BJJ started in Brazil, where beach and surf culture is the mainstream. Many of the initial waves of students were also avid surfers, and their background influenced the developing sport.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu also shares a lot of symbolism with water. When your opponent is acting like a rock, you should flow around them. 

Water shapes to the container it is held in, just like BJJ is shaped to the practitioner. Starting BJJ can feel like learning to swim for the first time, while experienced students seem to effortlessly float around you.

Most importantly, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu continues to get deeper the longer you practice, just like the ocean gets deeper the further you swim from the shore. You are never done learning - there is always more ocean to explore.
